Countdown to Christmas Cyber Security Tip #12

Blog

What is Ransomware?

You may have heard the term Ransomware on the news, but what does it actually mean?

Ransomware is malicious software that is used to encrypt (or steal) a victims data if they fail to pay a ransom.

It is fairly easy to hold a business to ransom as they need their data and systems to operate. Threats normally state that data will be destroyed or shared publicly, both having the potential to negatively impact a business.

Cyber criminals continue to send ransomware as it often pays out for them. The amounts demanded can be significant, but relatively low when weighed against the cost of the downtime a business experiences as a result of an attack.

It is still a very real threat.

How to prevent falling victim to a Ransomware Attack

  • Don’t open email attachments unless necessary.
  • Don’t follow unrecognised links.
  • Report any unusual or suspicious messages on your screen straight away.
