What is Ransomware?
You may have heard the term Ransomware on the news, but what does it actually mean?
Ransomware is malicious software that is used to encrypt (or steal) a victims data if they fail to pay a ransom.
It is fairly easy to hold a business to ransom as they need their data and systems to operate. Threats normally state that data will be destroyed or shared publicly, both having the potential to negatively impact a business.
Cyber criminals continue to send ransomware as it often pays out for them. The amounts demanded can be significant, but relatively low when weighed against the cost of the downtime a business experiences as a result of an attack.
It is still a very real threat.
How to prevent falling victim to a Ransomware Attack
- Don’t open email attachments unless necessary.
- Don’t follow unrecognised links.
