Countdown to Christmas Cyber Security Tip #15

What is a VPN?

A VPN is a Virtual Private Network and is an extension of your corporate network to your mobile device.

The purpose of a VPN is to allow you access to your company network whenever you are out of the office. There are a number of different options and some are more secure than others.

VPN’s can be set up to work in the way they need to for your business and your role.

Site to Site VPNs can be used to link satellite offices where you have multiple users working from one location back to a remote server. This will allow the team to authenticate logins and access resources without needing to do anything on their local computer.

End User VPN are configured on your own workstation, and allow you to manually connect when you’re out of the office using any internet connection.

Key benefits of using a VPN

  • It is more secure than using Public Wi-Fi alone.
  • Can provide you with easy access to your company network when working remotely.
  • Ensure that mobile workers have access to all shared resources they need to enable them to complete their tasks when not in the office.
  • Eliminates the need for you to save sensitive information locally on your laptop, and risk that falling into the wrong hands if your laptop were lost or stolen.
