Countdown to Christmas Cyber Security Tip #5

NEED HELP WITH YOUR BUSINESS IT?

If you’re looking to improve the way your IT supports your business, CCS can help. We’ll work with you to make sure your systems are reliable, secure and set up to support the way your team works now and for future growth.

What is Two Factor Authentication?

A good way to add an additional layer to your security is Two-Factor Authentication, also known as 2FA, Multi-Factor Authentication or 2 Step Verification.

Two factors (hence the name) are required to complete logon, usually this is something you know (your password) and something you have (a fob or your phone). You use your password to logon to the system (or website) and then enter a random code (from your fob or mobile) to complete the process.

Two factor authentication has been used in the banking industry for some time and is now available as standard on more and more applications as well as social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter.

This means that if someone tries to access a device, system or application, they will also need to have stolen your mobile (or fob) to get through the additional security step.

Possible but less likely.

Adding this additional step and requesting the randomly generated code makes it even harder for someone to steal your personal information and business data so it’s well worth enabling it where you can. Plus it’s a requirement if your business needs Cyber Essentials.

Steve founded CCS IT Solutions in 2004, and has spent over two decades helping small and medium-sized businesses get IT support that's practical, not just fast, asking the awkward questions early rather than waiting for something to go wrong. Outside of work, Steve's usually training for his next running challenge, having taken on the London Marathon, the Great North Run, and ultra distances across England, Scotland and Wales. He brings roughly the same steady, one-mile-at-a-time approach to both.
