Why can’t I send, forward or reply from Outlook.com, Office 365, or Exchange 2016 in iOS 11 Mail application?

If you’ve updated your apple device to the latest version iOS 11 released today and you use Outlook.com, Office 365 or Exchange 2016 server, you may be finding you can’t send, forward or reply to emails.

Undoubtedly this is causing you some inconvenience as you won’t be able to respond to work emails on your apple device, which if you’re working remotely is a pain.[custom_frame_right shadow=”off”]Checking emails on your iphone[/custom_frame_right]

Unfortunately there is an issue which both Apple and Microsoft has acknowledged and are working together to resolve it as quickly as possible.

Here are both of their responses to the issue, but no details of a time frame for a fix which doesn’t help you get back up and running now.

So what is the error message?

“Cannot Send Mail. The message was rejected by the server.”

Why am I getting it?

Basically, this is happening because the Mail app on iOS 11 is not compatible with Outlook.com, Office 365, or Exchange Server 2016 running on Windows Server 2016.

How can I work around it?

Although we will all have to wait for a proper fix from Apple, there is a way to get around the issue in the meantime to keep you working and able to respond to emails.

Microsoft suggest;

Download the free Outlook for iOS client from the App Store. Outlook for iOS fully supports various email services, including Outlook.com, Office 365, and Exchange Server 2016. 

If you have an IT Support Provider

If you use the Mail app to sync data from Exchange Server 2016 that is running on Windows Server 2016, they can disable HTTP/2 in Windows Server 2016 as a workaround.
